Built Around the Specification, Substrate & Service Environment
PROTECTIVE COATING PROJECT STANDARDS

Specification-Based Systems
Coating systems reviewed against project specifications, substrate conditions, exposure requirements and intended service environment.

Surface Preparation
Concrete, steel, metal and masonry substrates prepared according to the requirements of the specified coating system.

Professional Application
Spray, roller and other application methods selected according to the product, substrate and project requirements.

Inspection & Closeout
Completed coating systems reviewed for coverage, required touch-ups and project closeout requirements.
Pricing depends on the deck’s square footage, railings, stairs, height, access, wood condition, existing coating, required finish removal, sanding, repairs and selected stain system. An on-site review is required for an accurate written estimate.
Controlled washing may be used when appropriate, but the preparation method depends on the wood and existing finish. Excessive pressure can damage wood fibers. Some decks require cleaners, stain remover, scrubbing, rinsing or sanding instead of relying on pressure alone.
No. Sanding is included when required to address raised fibers, splinters, rough areas, failed finish edges or other conditions identified in the scope.
Only when the existing finish is sound and compatible with the proposed product. Incompatible, peeling or nonabsorptive finishes may need to be removed before staining.
Drying time depends on the preparation method, wood, weather and product. Some traditional systems require the wood to dry thoroughly for several days, while certain products are formulated for damp wood. The selected product instructions control.
The wood must be ready to absorb the stain. Sherwin-Williams’ general homeowner guidance recommends waiting approximately four to eight weeks for a newly built deck and performing a water-drop absorption test, but the lumber and stain manufacturer’s instructions should control the actual project.
Drying and use times vary by product, temperature, humidity and film thickness. Many stains require at least 24 hours, while some oil-based products may require up to 72 hours before full use.
Minor approved repairs may be included or separately priced. Structural damage, framing problems, rot or major board replacement may require a dedicated deck-repair or construction scope.
